Michael Rose, Fox Theater, Boulder Colorado, February 8th, 2002

Jason Dozza, Reggaemovement.com

Michael Rose, better known as the former front-man for the legendary reggae super-group Black Uhuru, made a second tour stop in Colorado at the Fox Theater in Boulder, CO and Reggaemovement.com was there to present him.

To say Michael's best music is behind him is a gross injustice.  Although his solo career has not achieved the international acclaim that he received as a Grammy award winning member of Black Uhuru, Michael Rose has proven that he is a reggae legend and remains one of the best reggae acts on tour today.  With an instantly recognizable voice, Rose puts forth an unmistakable sound and energy that can captivate an audience.  If you have ever felt the emotion in another persons wail, it was probably Michael Rose that uttered it.

Fans making it to the show early got a taste of Rose when he came out on the stage during the last song of local band, and opening act, Jeep.  Like an old school teacher handing out the lesson of the day, Michael interjected lyrics from Shine Eye Gal as Jeep played a rocking rhythm.  It was easy to see the professional side of Rose as his stage presence is commanding.  I may have been a bit over anxious to see him, but his voice on that song sounded so good I actually thought about purchasing the opening bands CD. Then I realized that you could put Rose in front of a country music band and it would sell records.

When it was Michaels turn to take the stage, he proceeded through a set list that covered many of the Black Uhuru standards.  Songs such as Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Party in Session, Sensimilla, and Sponji Reggae left no doubt in anyone’s mind that his lyrics and voice were a major factor in the success of Black Uhuru.  He also mixed in a number of originals, which sounded like they came from the same era.  Songs like Short Temper and Never Give It Up prove that he hasn't missed a beat.   Michael had strong backing as Buju Banton’s band was laying down the beats.  They were top notch as usual.

After seeing Black Uhuru with Sly and Robbie, and Michael Rose solo, my only regret is not being able to see them together.  Sly and Robbie are by far, the best rhythm duo in existence, but their awesome beats lacked the beautiful tenor that only Michael Rose could provide.  Michael Rose’s voice, amazing as it is, would have been even better with Sly and Robbie backing him.  Who knows what the future will bring.  I can only hope for the best.
