Reviewed by Jeremy Caplan for The Reggae Movement

The Torch of the Bobo youth was brought to Boulder’s Fox Theater on Tuesday, September 30 as Sizzla Kolanji returned once again to the Front Range for a night of fire burn on corruption, greed, and impurity.

Backed by one of Jamaica’s most famous bands, The Fire House Crew, Sizzla ran through a lengthy hour and forty-five minute set that showcased songs from his ever- expanding repertoire of over twenty-five albums.

At still a very young age of his mid twenties, sizzla is by far one of the hardest working deejays in all Jamaica and puts out almost four or five albums every year. He has been an inspiration for many other younger artists such as Turbulence, who opened the show, as well as other youth that have just begun to start their careers and bring music to the states.

The evening started out with local music by Zionway Sound System and Jus Goodie. Rocker T was an added treat giving the crowd a short set of the music that has helped to make him a US hit. Promoting his newest album, “More Love,” Rocker will be touring throughout Colorado this month.

After a short instrumental by Donald Dennis and the Firehouse Crew, Turbulence, One of Dancehall’s hottest young talents fresh off the release of two new albums took the stage.

Touching on tunes from his earlier albums such as “On my way to Zion,” and newer ones such as “Bun Dem Down,” and “Marhiuana,” Turbulence showed the boulder crowd his versatile talents in singing and roughing up the dancehall.

The one and only Sizzla Kolanji fully dressed in denim and red came storming the stage next and brought with him an empire of dancehall classics that span over countless singles and numerous albums released in the UK and US every year.

Sizzla must have touched on nearly thirty songs during his set and gave the audience a wide range of new and old tunes that have made him the Dancehall icon he is today.

Classics like “Good Ways,” “Holding Firm,” and “One Away” remind us of a younger Sizzla in the time when albums like Black Women and Child and Praise Ye Jah were making their mark on modern reggae.

Newer hits like “Thank you Mamma” and  “Got it right there” showed the crowd a more versatile artist that can be seen on current releases like Da Real Thing and Ghetto Revolution.

Sizzla is by far one of the most prominent voices in modern conscious Dancehall and even as this is being read he is in the process of releasing his fourth album of 2003 titled Rise to the Occasion on Greensleeves record label.

This singer, songwriter, producer, and architecture student continues to bring his powerful performance to Boulder annually. Sizzla always showers the audience with his firm Bobo Ashanti views and will continue to be at the height of Dancehall until he lets more of Kingston’s ghetto youth get a shot at making it like he did.

Give Thanks for yet another great night of Dancehall in Boulder!
