The Best of Delroy Wilson, "Original Eighteen"
Delroy Wilson
Reggae Movement Review
As a young teen, Delroy Wilson got his
start at Studio One under the tutelage of Clement Dodd and surrounded by
Jamaica's top musicians - the Skatalites and the Soul Vendors, and
artists like Bob Marley & the Wailers, Alton Ellis, Marcia Griffiths,
Ken Boothe, the Heptones, and other luminaries. He recorded his first
songs while standing on a Red Stripe beer box, but while at Studio One,
he developed into one of Jamaica's great soul singers and one of reggae
music's most beloved artist and songwriter. Delroy's prolific career
spanned the musical eras of ska, rock steady, and modern reggae and was
only cut short when he tragically passed away in 1995. |
Too Bad
Buju Banton
International reggae icon Banton, a.k.a.
Gargamel, comes full circle with his first pure dancehall collection in
over a decade. This fiery seventeen-song set features the production
wizardry of such industry giants as Steely & Cleevie and Sly & Robbie.
The street single, "Nothing", is a hard-edged dancehall gem already
receiving airplay at specialty and mixshow radio. The lead commercial
release, "Fast Lane", is a classy track that boasts a more reflective
Buju chatting hypnotic, lyrical verse over an unconventional riddim
steeped in jazzy, rare grooves. |

Downbeat the Ruler
Killer
Instrumentals from Studio One
Heartbeat

Killer Instrumentals from Studio One No
other producer in Jamaica can ever claim the legacy or challenge the
supremacy of Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's Studio One label. For over 50
years until his recent death, Dodd ruled over the Jamaican music scene
by the very force of his personality, and by the breadth of his musical
accomplishments. Downbeat the Ruler is filled with the instrumentals
that galvanized the public, and brought the label to the top of its
popularity. Other producers, unable to compete against this onslaught,
began to copy these instrumentals for their own usage and a new
profession was born, the copy-cat. But here on this release anyone can
own the original versions that made it all happen. The top sounds by the
top bands at Studio One.

Filled with 18 crucial selections, this is
musical murder. Heavy scorchers like "Real Rock" and "Swing Easy"
abound, and this is the real thing, so copy-cats and weak hearts, take
notice. These are the killers from The Scorcher. |

Conscious Dancehall Rastaman Junior Kelly knows how tough life can be.
He was
raised in a musical family, listening to his Dad and Grandpa play
the violin, and his Mom singing at church. The heartbreaking episode of
his life may have been the murder of his big brother, Jim. Jim had deejayed for Kilamanjaro Sound System and practiced often in his house
near Junior, who was born Keith Morgan.
Things seemed tough, and when
things got tough, the tough got going. His Rastafarian ideals guided
him through his tribulations, and as he remained true to them, his
musical fruits blossomed. His albums so far have been: Rise, Love So
Nice, Conscious Voice, Juvenile, Bless, and Smile. |

PRESSURE DROP,
THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION
TOOTS &
THE MAYTALS
Trojan Records
After bursting upon the Jamaican music scene in
1963, the Maytals (Frederick "Toots" Hibber, Nathaniel "Gerry" McCarthy
and Henry "Raleigh" Gordon) quickly made their mark as one of the
island's leading vocal acts with a series of Ska hits for the likes of
Coxsone Dodd, Prince Buster and Byron Lee. The Rocksteady and early
Reggae years brought further success, including their 1969 UK hit,
"Monkey Man" and in the mid-seventies their international appeal was
reflected in a deal with Island Records. Since then, McCarthy and Gordon
have retired, but Toots continues to tour and record, releasing the
Grammy winning "True Love" album just last year.
Tracing Toots & The Maytals' development from Ska
kings to international stars, "Pressure Drop" brings together an
incredible selection of hits from a time when Toots & The Maytals
rivaled Bob Marley & the Wailers as Jamaica's premiere vocal group.
Without doubt the most comprehensive anthology of the trio's works ever
to see issue, "Pressure Drop" is an essential purchase for anyone with
an interest in the group or classic Jamaican sounds. |
HIS MAJESTY IS COMING
THE IN
CROWD
Trojan Records
Reggae Movement Review
Prior to
forming The In Crowd in the mid-seventies, Phil Callender worked as a
session player, playing the drums at Jamaica's Studio One in the late
sixties before making his mark as a guitarist the following decade,
backing many of Jamaica's leading acts. His distinctive tenor and
immense song-writing talents finally came to the fore in the late
seventies, after he had formed The In Crowd, a septet with whom he
enjoyed numerous Jamaican hits, including "Born In Ethiopia," "We Play
Reggae," "His Majesty Is Coming," and "Back A Yard."
Originally
issued by Creole Records in 1978, The In Crowd's best-selling "His
Majesty Is Coming" album finally receives its due respect with this
long-overdue reissue. Augmented by a number of the group's non-album
recordings from the period, plus Phil Callender's most popular late
seventies solo material, this is in essence a "best of," which is truly
an essential collection for any self respecting fan of Roots Reggae. |

of what such a musical landscape would be like in his latest album, Countryman.
At first glance, one
might question the validity of marrying skanky reggae with the twang of
country, and in fact this writer was initially caught off guard at the
interesting sound that came from Countryman. However, after listening
further, the comforts of Willie’s
music lends itself well to the offbeat feel of reggae and is indeed a

Ras Records
“Dylan songs as reggae is a natural fit.” - Billboard
Last year you
heard “Is It Rolling Bob? A
Reggae Tribute To Bob Dylan.” Now prepare for Dylan dub-wise! A
phenomenal re-imagination of songs of America's most notable songwriter by
some of the most celebrated reggae musicians, this remarkable collection
marries reggae stars like Toots Hibbert,
Beres Hammond,
The Mighty Diamonds and
Sizzla with Dylan material ranging
from “Blowin' In The Wind” to “Knockin' On Heaven's Door,” now in dub
versions.
Dub is a Jamaican invention from
the late 1960's, born from the efforts of a ground breaking engineer named
King Tubby. These versions, dubbed by engineer Jim Fox and producer Doctor
Dread, take on a whole new life as they grew from the vocal mix into
spacey musical excursions. The album features a newly crafted, Dylan
approved, dub remix of “I And I.” The song originally appears on Dylan's
Infidels album, and features the legendary drum and bass duo Sly & Robbie.
Says Sly Dunbar, “Doctor Dread really did a great job on this. We have now
baptized Bob Dylan in dub.”
